Description: In 1995, in the Ura Valley of Bhutan, four friends—Greg, Fiona, Ruthie, and Paul—decide to hike up a mountain. During their trek, Paul hears a peculiar whistling sound and, while investigating, falls into a crevice. Greg discovers Paul in a nearly catatonic state, trembling and staring at a massive, bizarre, inhuman skeleton embedded in the cave wall. Paul warns Greg not to touch him, claiming that doing so would result in Greg’s death. Despite the warning, Greg eventually grabs Paul and drags him out of the crevice. The group takes Paul to a refuge in an empty house as a snowstorm begins. Greg, Fiona, and Ruthie argue over whether Paul is pretending or genuinely unwell.
Paul, who has a history of depression and past suicide attempts, remains in a fragile state. The next day, Ruthie encounters and is chased by a strange figure—the spirit of the creature from the cave. That night, Paul, gradually being possessed by the evil spirit, whispers something into Ruthie’s ear. The following morning, Paul goes missing. The group eventually finds him lying in the snow near the bridge they had crossed earlier. Ruthie, in a trance-like state, stabs Greg and slashes Fiona’s throat, then throws their bodies off the cliff. She shares a haunting gaze with Paul, now fully possessed as “The Empty Man,” before jumping to her death. The possessed Paul becomes “empty” as he is now controlled by the malevolent entity.
In 2018 Missouri, former detective James Lasombra works at a security store while grieving the loss of his wife, Allison, and their son, Henry, who died in a car accident a year earlier. He befriends a local woman named Nora, and the two grow concerned when Nora’s daughter, Amanda, seemingly disappears. They discover a chilling message written in blood in the bathroom: “The Empty Man made me do it.” The police launch an investigation, and James tracks down Amanda’s friend, Devara, at school to question her about the incident.
