Description: In a quiet suburban town in the Hudson Valley, young Henry Carpenter, an eleven-year-old genius, lives with his younger brother Peter and their single mother Susan. Susan works as a waitress while aspiring to write children’s picture books. Henry has used his intelligence to invest in the stock market, securing a significant financial future for his family. He also defends Peter from school bullies and creates intricate Rube Goldberg machines in their treehouse. Both Henry and Susan care deeply for their neighbor, Christina Sickleman, who has recently become withdrawn.
Henry begins to suspect Christina is being abused by her stepfather, Glenn, the local police commissioner. Despite reporting his concerns to social services and the school principal, Janice Wilder, Glenn’s influence prevents any serious investigation. Henry believes that those who can help must act when someone is in danger. He devises a detailed plan to rescue Christina, documenting it in a notebook. After suffering a severe seizure, Henry is diagnosed with a brain tumor and undergoes surgery. Knowing he may not survive, he instructs Peter to give the notebook to Susan. Tragically, Henry passes away in Susan’s arms at the hospital.
Overwhelmed by grief, Susan struggles to function. When Peter hands her Henry’s notebook, she becomes determined to fulfill his plan. She attempts to involve social services again but fails. One night, while observing Glenn from Peter’s bedroom window, Susan decides to take action. Henry’s notebook outlines a meticulous strategy for assassinating Glenn using a sniper rifle, ensuring Susan’s involvement remains untraceable. The plan includes creating an alibi by carrying out the act during a school talent show, while both Christina and Peter are performing.
