**Storyline:**
Venus “Vee” Delmonico, a high school senior, dreams of leaving Staten Island for college but hasn’t told her mother as they are still grieving the loss of her older brother. Her friend Sydney gains popularity through Nerve, an online reality game where participants can either be “players” who complete dares or “watchers” who vote and fund the challenges. Players who successfully complete dares earn money and compete to become the day’s winner.
Sydney criticizes Vee for being too cautious, prompting Vee to join the game as a player. Upon signing up, Vee learns the game’s three rules:
1. All dares must be recorded on the player’s phone.
2. Any money earned will be revoked if a player fails or quits a dare.
3. “Snitches get stitches.”
Vee’s first dare is to kiss a stranger at a diner for five seconds. She meets Ian, who reveals he is also a player on a dare. The watchers then dare Ian to take Vee to Manhattan on his motorcycle. In Manhattan, they are challenged to try on expensive formalwear. Their street clothes are stolen, and the watchers dare them to leave the store in their undergarments. Later, they find the expensive outfits paid for by the watchers.
As the game progresses, Vee is dared to get a tattoo chosen by Ian, while Ian is dared to ride his motorcycle blindfolded at 60 mph with Vee steering him. The two succeed and share a kiss, quickly rising as top players in Nerve.
Meanwhile, Sydney, jealous of Vee’s success, accepts a dangerous dare involving her fear of heights. She panics and fails, eliminating her from the game. Vee later catches Sydney with J.P., a boy she likes, adding tension to their friendship.
