**Storyline:**
At the Central Park Zoo, Marty the zebra celebrates his tenth birthday but feels bored with his routine and dreams of experiencing the wild. His best friend, Alex the lion, enjoys his celebrity status as “the king of New York” and tries to cheer Marty up. However, Marty remains unsatisfied and discovers that the zoo’s penguins—Skipper, Kowalski, Rico, and Private—are planning an escape. Intrigued, Marty follows them out of the zoo. Alex, along with Melman the giraffe and Gloria the hippopotamus, chases after Marty to convince him to return.
The group, along with the penguins and two chimpanzees named Mason and Phil, end up at Grand Central Station, where authorities sedate them with tranquilizer guns. Under pressure from activists, the zoo decides to ship the escaped animals to a wildlife preserve in Kenya. During the journey, the penguins take control of the ship, aiming for Antarctica. Their actions cause the crates containing Alex, Marty, Melman, and Gloria to fall into the ocean, eventually washing ashore on Madagascar.
On the island, the animals encounter a group of lemurs led by King Julien XIII. The predatory fossa attack the lemurs but are frightened off by Alex’s intimidating presence. Alex blames Marty for their predicament and tries to find a way back to civilization. Meanwhile, Marty embraces the wild, and Gloria and Melman also start to enjoy their new surroundings. However, Alex struggles as hunger triggers his predatory instincts.
King Julien encourages the lemurs to befriend the zoo animals, hoping Alex will protect them from the fossa. But when Alex loses control and attacks Marty, Julien banishes him to the predator side of the island. Witnessing Alex’s struggles and the dangers of the wild, Marty begins to regret leaving the zoo.
The penguins, having found Antarctica uninhabitable, return the ship to Madagascar. Seeing an opportunity to get back to New York, Marty ventures to the predator side to convince Alex to return. Though hesitant due to his fear of harming Marty again, Alex ultimately overcomes his instincts to rescue his friends from a fossa attack. The fossa are scared off, and the group reunites.
The lemurs regain their respect for Alex, and the penguins satisfy his hunger with sushi. As the lemurs throw a farewell celebration, the penguins decide not to reveal that the ship has run out of fuel.
