Description: “My Week With Marilyn,” released in 2011, is a captivating film that tells the story of Colin Clark, an aspiring filmmaker who graduates from Christ Church, Oxford, in 1956. Determined to pursue his passion, Colin travels to London to secure a job on Laurence Olivier’s next production. Despite initially being told there are no available positions, Colin persists and eventually lands a role on Olivier’s film “The Prince and the Showgirl,” starring Marilyn Monroe.
Colin’s first assignment is to find a suitable residence for Marilyn and her husband, renowned playwright Arthur Miller, during their stay in England. His resourcefulness impresses both Olivier and Marilyn’s publicist, Arthur P. Jacobs, when he secures a backup house after the press discovers the first one.
As Marilyn arrives in England, her presence attracts significant media attention. Despite her initial discomfort, she eases into the spotlight during the press conference. However, tensions arise on set as Marilyn struggles with punctuality, memorizing lines, and understanding her character. Her acting coach, Paula Strasberg, accompanies her, often reading lines when Marilyn has difficulty.
Olivier grows increasingly frustrated with Marilyn’s delays, while other cast members, including Sybil Thorndike, admire her talent and defend her. Colin, meanwhile, develops a connection with Lucy, a wardrobe assistant, and the two begin dating.
Marilyn’s struggles deepen when she discovers a notebook belonging to Arthur, containing a play that appears to mock her. Arthur eventually returns to the United States, leaving Marilyn emotionally vulnerable. Vivien Leigh, Olivier’s wife, visits the set and witnesses Marilyn’s compelling performance, leading to a heated argument with Olivier about his inability to appreciate her on-screen brilliance.
The film explores the complexities of Marilyn Monroe’s life and her impact on those around her, offering a poignant glimpse into the world of Hollywood and the challenges of fame.
