Description: Anna Khitrova, a midwife at a London hospital, discovers a Russian-language diary on the body of Tatiana, a teenage girl who dies during childbirth. The diary leads Anna to Semyon, an old Russian mafia leader who owns the Trans-Siberian Restaurant. Determined to find Tatiana’s family and a home for the baby, Anna seeks Semyon’s help. While her mother Helen supports the idea, Anna’s uncle Stepan, a former KGB officer, warns her to be cautious, revealing that Tatiana was a prostitute. Anna also gives Semyon a photocopy of the diary.
Nikolai Luzhin, Semyon’s driver and bodyguard, works closely with Kirill, Semyon’s troubled son. Kirill, often drunk and reckless, unauthorizedly orders a hit on a rival Chechen leader with the help of a Kurdish associate, Azim. Despite Kirill’s actions, Nikolai covers up the crime by removing evidence and disposing of the body in the River Thames.
As Stepan translates Tatiana’s diary, Anna uncovers the horrifying truth: Semyon raped Tatiana after Kirill failed to do so, and he gave her pills to induce an abortion. Disturbed by this revelation, Anna realizes the baby’s true father is Semyon. Meanwhile, Semyon becomes aware that Anna knows the truth and confronts her, offering a deal to reveal Tatiana’s family’s location in exchange for the diary. However, when Anna, Helen, and Stepan meet Nikolai to hand over the diary, Nikolai denies knowledge of the deal. Shortly after, Semyon orders Stepan’s elimination, fearing he cannot be trusted with the information.
