Description: “Gurov & Anna” is a 2014 Canadian drama film directed by Rafaël Ouellet. The story revolves around Ben, a literature professor in Montreal who is deeply fascinated by Anton Chekhov’s short story “The Lady with the Dog.” Ben’s marriage to Audrey is on the verge of collapse, and he enters into a passionate affair with Mercedes, a young student in his writing class. As their relationship intensifies, it spirals out of control, impacting not only their emotions but also Ben’s family. Ben, a former failed writer now teaching English literature, finds himself drawn to the themes of Chekhov’s work, particularly the idea of adultery transforming into true love. However, his attempt to recreate this narrative in his own life leads to unforeseen consequences, leaving no one unaffected. The film premiered at the 19th Busan International Film Festival in October 2014 and marked Ouellet’s first English-language production as well as his first time directing a screenplay written by someone else. Screenwriter Céleste Parr received a nomination for Best Screenplay at the 18th Quebec Cinema Awards in 2016.
