The story follows Emily Elizabeth, a middle school student in New York City who faces bullying at her upscale private school. She lives with her mother, Maggie, and her only friend is a nerdy classmate named Owen Yu. During a visit to a carnival, Emily meets Mr. Bridwell, who runs an animal rescue tent. He introduces her to a small red puppy, explaining that the dog’s size will grow depending on the amount of love he receives. Despite Casey’s objections, knowing Maggie would disapprove and that dogs are banned in their apartment building, Emily brings the puppy home after finding him hidden in her backpack. She names him Clifford and convinces Casey to let her keep him for just one night. Heartbroken and wishing for Clifford to have a wonderful life, Emily falls asleep with tears on his nose.
The next morning, Clifford has grown to an enormous size. Shocked, Emily and Casey try to hide him from their building’s superintendent, Mr. Packard. They take Clifford to a vet, assuming he is sick, but their efforts to keep him concealed fail when Clifford’s playful instincts lead him to chase an inflatable bubble in public, drawing a massive crowd. His existence quickly goes viral online.
Meanwhile, Zack Tieran, the CEO of a biotech company called Lifegro, sees Clifford on social media and falsely claims the dog as his own. He enlists the police to search for Clifford. As a result, Emily and Casey are evicted from their apartment. After evading both the police and Lifegro’s security team, they find refuge in Owen’s luxurious apartment.
