Description: In 1924, Roxie Hart watches Velma Kelly perform in a Chicago theater, dreaming of her own stardom. She begins an affair with Fred Casely, who falsely claims to have showbiz connections. Meanwhile, Velma is arrested for murdering her husband and sister after catching them together.
A month later, Casely admits he lied to Roxie about his connections, leading her to shoot him in anger. She convinces her husband, Amos, to take the blame, claiming self-defense against a burglar. However, when evidence of the affair surfaces, Amos withdraws his confession, and Roxie is arrested. The District Attorney seeks the death penalty.
At Cook County Jail, Roxie is placed on Murderess’ Row under the care of Matron “Mama” Morton. She meets Velma, who rejects her attempts at friendship. Roxie learns the stories of the other inmates and hires Velma’s lawyer, Billy Flynn. Together, they manipulate the media, turning Roxie into a beloved public figure by crafting a false narrative of her life.
As Roxie’s fame grows, Velma, now overshadowed, tries to collaborate with her, but Roxie refuses, mirroring Velma’s earlier rejection.
