Description: The 2019 Hindi film “Bharat” is set in Delhi during the year 2010. The story revolves around Bharat, a shopkeeper who refuses to sell his store despite receiving profitable offers. On his 70th birthday, he shares his life journey with his grandniece, taking the audience into a flashback.
Bharat’s life takes a tragic turn during the partition of India in 1947. His family, along with many refugees, boards a train to safety amidst the violent riots in Pakistan. Amid the chaos, Bharat loses his baby sister, Gudiya. His father, Gautam, stays behind to search for her, leaving Bharat with the responsibility of caring for the family. Bharat moves to his aunt Jamuna and uncle Keemat Rai Kapoor’s imported goods store.
As a young boy, Bharat strives to support his family and befriends Vilayti. Together, they meet Radha, a roadside circus worker, and both develop feelings for her. The trio later joins The Great Russian Circus, where Bharat gains fame. However, during a celebration, his brother Chote is injured in an accident while trying to imitate him. Devastated, Bharat parts ways with Radha.
Following the death of Jawaharlal Nehru, Bharat and Vilayti struggle to find work. Seeking better opportunities, Bharat joins Indian migrants heading to Saudi Arabia after the discovery of oil. There, he falls in love with his chief engineer, Kumud Raina, whom he affectionately calls “Madam Sir.” Though Kumud proposes marriage, Bharat declines, fearing it would hinder his promise to his father.
Later, Kumud travels to India to express her love for Bharat, and they begin a live-in relationship. After Jamuna’s death, Bharat is appointed as a stationmaster. During the 1983 Cricket World Cup, Keemat plans to sell the store due to financial difficulties. Bharat, however, opposes the idea, as both he and Jamuna had worked hard to build it. Keemat suggests Bharat buy the store himself, which he does, holding onto hope that his father will return one day.
