Description: Believe Me: The Abduction of Lisa McVey is a 2018 film based on a true story.
The movie follows 17-year-old Lisa McVey, who lives with her neglectful grandmother and her grandmother’s abusive boyfriend, Morris, in Tampa Bay, Florida. Morris regularly sexually assaults Lisa, and her grandmother turns a blind eye to the abuse. One night, while returning home from work, Lisa is kidnapped by Bobby Joe Long. He rapes her in his car before taking her to his apartment. When Lisa’s disappearance is reported, her grandmother dismisses it, assuming she ran away.
During her captivity, Lisa is held bound and blindfolded while enduring repeated assaults. Discovering that Bobby has been deeply hurt by women in the past, Lisa cleverly uses reverse psychology to earn his trust. Meanwhile, she secretly leaves evidence behind, such as fingerprints and strands of hair, and memorizes details about Bobby and his apartment whenever she can remove her blindfold.
After 26 hours, Bobby claims he must eliminate Lisa and takes her to a remote wooded area. Holding a gun to her head, he ultimately spares her life after she pleads with him. Lisa memorizes the location as Bobby flees the scene. Upon returning home, she confronts her grandmother and Morris, but they refuse to believe her story and brutally beat her for hours. Eventually, her grandmother calls the police, who take Lisa in for questioning.
At the station, detectives are investigating a series of murders involving nine women over the past few months. Sergeant Larry Pinkerton, a specialist in sex crimes, takes on Lisa’s case after other detectives find her detailed account hard to believe. Pinkerton, however, trusts her and suspects her abductor is the serial killer they’ve been searching for. Forensic tests on Lisa’s clothing reveal fibers matching those found on the victims, further connecting Bobby to the crimes.
