The true story of a day that started like any other|Oct. 05, 2018|Norway|143 Min.|R

Description: On July 22, 2011, Anders Behring Breivik dressed in a police uniform, loaded a van with homemade explosives, and drove to Regjeringskvartalet, the executive government quarter in Oslo, Norway. He left the van outside the office of Prime Minister Jens Stoltenberg. Shortly after, it exploded, causing several casualties.

Meanwhile, on the island of Utøya in Tyrifjorden, Buskerud, teenagers had gathered for the Workers’ Youth League (AUF) summer camp, organized by the ruling Labour Party. When they heard about the bombing, one student, Viljar Hanssen, called his parents to ensure their safety.

Breivik arrived at the ferry landing, claiming to be a police officer sent to secure the island following the Oslo attack. After being transported to the island, he instructed the staff to gather the children in one place. When asked for identification, he shot the camp director and the head of security dead. The teenagers fled as Breivik opened fire, killing dozens.

Viljar and his brother Torje hid on a rocky embankment by the beach. Viljar called his mother to inform her of the ongoing shooting. Breivik eventually found them and began shooting. Viljar was hit multiple times, but Torje managed to escape unharmed. Breivik later surrendered to a tactical team and was taken for interrogation.

During questioning, Breivik claimed to be the leader of a white nationalist group called the Knights Templar and warned of more attacks. He requested the assistance of lawyer Geir Lippestad, who had previously defended a Neo-Nazi. Lippestad struggled with his moral conscience but was bound by his professional ethics. He attempted to argue an insanity defense for Breivik, which faced criticism as it would lead to institutionalization rather than imprisonment.

With the help of psychiatrists and psychologists, Breivik was potentially diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia. However, Breivik insisted on being declared competent to validate the purpose of his attacks.
