Storyline: Two months have passed since a strain of mad cow disease mutated into “mad person disease,” eventually transforming into “mad zombie disease.” This outbreak has swept across the entire United States, with the infection likely spreading globally, turning countless Americans into violent zombies. Survivors have learned to avoid forming attachments to others, as death can strike at any moment. As a result, many have adopted their city of origin as their nicknames.
Lonely college student Columbus (Jesse Eisenberg) is traveling from his dorm in Austin, Texas, to Columbus, Ohio, hoping to find his parents alive. Along the way, he encounters Tallahassee (Woody Harrelson), a fellow survivor known for his aggressive zombie-killing tactics. Though initially distant, Tallahassee reluctantly allows Columbus to join him on his journey. During their travels, Tallahassee reveals his sorrow over losing his puppy, “Buck,” to zombies and his obsession with finding Twinkies.
Their paths cross with Wichita (Emma Stone) and her younger sister Little Rock (Abigail Breslin) in a grocery store. The sisters are con artists who trick Tallahassee and Columbus into surrendering their weapons by pretending Little Rock is infected. They steal the men’s Escalade, but the duo retaliates by finding a Hummer H2 loaded with weapons and pursuing the sisters. Despite being caught in another trap, Columbus convinces everyone to focus on their shared survival, leading to a tense alliance.
The sisters disclose their plan to head to Pacific Playland, an amusement park in Los Angeles rumored to be zombie-free. After discovering his hometown is destroyed and his parents likely dead, Columbus decides to join the group on their journey to California. Throughout the trip, Columbus attempts to win Wichita’s affection.
