**Storyline:**
The late 2000s have been a prolific period for the American maverick director Abel Ferrara. From 2019 to the present, he has produced three fiction films and two documentaries, including one about himself presenting a fictional feature, *Siberia*, in Berlin. While it would be unfair to claim that all three fictional films—*Tommaso*, *Siberia*, and *Zeros and Ones*—convey the same message, they can be seen as variations on a central theme: exploring the inner world of Abel Ferrara.
*Tommaso* offered a mix of pastoral beauty and torment, depicting a sober American artist living in Italy, much like Ferrara himself. *Siberia* delved into isolation and nightmares, set in a bar run by the protagonist, played by Willem Dafoe, who also starred in *Tommaso*.
*Zeros and Ones* returns to Italy, with a narrative centered around one of the country’s most iconic and sacred locations. This film also portrays a man in emotional isolation, this time played by Ethan Hawke instead of Dafoe. In many ways, it serves as Ferrara’s response to the pandemic quarantine—a unique and unconventional take unlike anything seen before.
The film opens with Hawke addressing the audience directly, introducing the story with an awkward yet earnest pitch, which is revealed at the end to have been part of a crowd-funding effort. This introduction is the most grounded moment in the film. Shot digitally by Sean Price Williams in an almost experimental style, *Zeros and Ones* spends much of its time following Hawke’s character, JJ, a military man stationed in Italy, as he wanders through a series of events typical of Ferrara’s cinematic universe.
