**Storyline:**
In 2013, Mitsuha Miyamizu, a high school girl from the small town of Itomori, Japan, grows tired of her rural life and dreams of being reborn as a Tokyo boy. One day, she starts inexplicably swapping bodies with Taki Tachibana, a high school boy living in Tokyo. On certain mornings, they wake up in each other’s bodies and must navigate the other’s daily life and social interactions. They communicate by leaving notes on paper, phones, or even on each other’s skin. While in Taki’s body, Mitsuha arranges a date for him with his coworker, Miki Okudera. Meanwhile, Taki, in Mitsuha’s body, boosts her popularity at school.
One day, Taki (in Mitsuha’s body) accompanies her grandmother Hitoha and younger sister Yotsuha to a mountaintop Shinto shrine outside Itomori. There, they leave an offering of kuchikamizake, a ritual alcohol made by the sisters, which is believed to represent the village’s guardian god of human connections and time. Taki reads a note from Mitsuha about the comet Tiamat, expected to pass closest to Earth on the day of the autumn festival. The next day, Taki wakes up in his own body and goes on a date with Miki, who senses he is preoccupied with thoughts of someone else. Taki tries to contact Mitsuha but finds the body-switching has ended.
Taki, Miki, and their friend Tsukasa travel to Gifu in search of Mitsuha. Guided by Taki’s sketches of Itomori’s landscape, a restaurant owner in Hida recognizes the town and takes them to its ruins. They discover Itomori was destroyed three years earlier when Tiamat fragmented unexpectedly, killing 500 residents.
