Storyline: In 660 AD, a Chinese fleet is attacked by a mysterious sea monster in the East China Sea, causing extensive damage. Empress Wu Zetian tasks Yuchi, an official from the Ministry of Justice, to investigate the attacks, with a death threat if he fails within ten days. Dee Renjie, a young detective, arrives in Luoyang to join the Court of Judicature and Revision. He accidentally uncovers a plot to kidnap Yin Ruiji, a courtesan offered to appease the sea monster. While fighting the kidnappers, Ruiji is taken by a humanoid sea creature but is rescued by Dee. Yuchi arrests Dee and places Ruiji in protective custody. In prison, Dee befriends Shatuo, a medical assistant who helps him escape. Later, the creature visits Ruiji, revealing itself as her lost lover, Yuan Zhen. When masked attackers raid the house, Dee, Yuchi, and Shatuo intervene. During the chaos, Ruiji stabs Dee to protect Yuan, who flees. Dee deduces that the attackers are from Dondo, aiming to poison the imperial tea and assassinate Emperor Gaozong and his court.
