**Storyline:**
Set in 1860 during the final years of the Edo period, the story follows a wandering rōnin through a desolate Japanese countryside. While stopping at a farmhouse for water, he overhears an elderly couple grieving over their son, who has left to join the local gamblers in a nearby town overrun by criminals. The town is divided between two rival bosses, Ushitora and Seibei, who are locked in a violent feud over control of the gambling trade. Seibei, the original leader, had chosen his incompetent son Yoichiro as his successor, leading Ushitora to rebel and align with the sake brewer Tokuemon.
The rōnin, intrigued by the chaos, decides to stay in the town, believing it would benefit from the destruction of both factions. He offers his services to the weaker Seibei, effortlessly killing three of Ushitora’s men to prove his skill. When asked for his name, he glances at a mulberry field and calls himself Kuwabatake Sanjuro.
Sanjuro’s plan to turn the factions against each other is complicated by Seibei’s wife, who secretly orders Yoichiro to kill him after the upcoming raid. Sanjuro leads the attack but abandons both sides, expecting them to annihilate each other. However, his strategy is disrupted by the sudden arrival of a government official.
