Description: “Yaariyan,” released in 2014, follows the story of Lakshya, the son of a martyred army officer who fails to value his father’s sacrifice. Set on a university campus in Sikkim, Lakshya shares a close bond with four friends: Jiya, the college heartthrob; Saloni, the intellectual; Pardy, the drummer; and Neil, the biker. Together, they navigate college life, relationships, and aimless adventures.
One incident involves Lakshya and his girlfriend, Jenny, attempting to share a private moment in the library, only to be interrupted by Pardy and caught by the principal. Later, during a function, Jiya is accidentally exposed in her underwear in front of an audience, while Lakshya and Jenny dangle from a chain above. This leads to Jenny breaking up with Lakshya.
The group faces a major challenge when their college land is purchased by an Australian businessman who plans to build a casino. However, he offers to lease the land back to the college for 100 years if the students can defeat a team of Australian competitors in a five-round contest. The principal selects the five friends to represent the college.
The first three rounds take place in Australia, where Lakshya reunites with his cousin and best friend, Debu. During the initial round, a rock concert, the Australian band steals Lakshya’s song and brutally attacks Debu when confronted. Despite their efforts, Lakshya’s band loses the round. Saloni secures victory in the second round, a chess competition, but Debu succumbs to his injuries and dies. Devastated by the loss, Saloni and Neil fail in the third round, a bike race, leaving Australia with a 2–1 lead.
The story highlights themes of friendship, resilience, and the pursuit of purpose as the group continues to fight for their college and themselves.
