Description: “Women Talking” is a 2022 American drama film written and directed by Sarah Polley. The movie is adapted from Miriam Toews’ 2018 novel of the same name, inspired by real-life events in the Manitoba Colony, a secluded Mennonite community in Bolivia. The film features a talented cast, including Rooney Mara, Claire Foy, Jessie Buckley, Judith Ivey, Ben Whishaw, and Frances McDormand, who also served as a producer.
The story unfolds in an isolated Mennonite colony where women and girls discover that the men have been drugging and raping them using cow tranquilizers. Following the arrest of the perpetrators, the men leave to oversee bail, leaving the women two days to decide their next steps. The women must choose between staying and doing nothing, staying and fighting, or leaving the colony. After a tied vote, eleven women gather in a hayloft to make a final decision. However, one woman, Scarface, leaves the meeting, taking her daughter Anna and granddaughter Helena with her.
“Women Talking” premiered at the 49th Telluride Film Festival on September 2, 2022. It was released in select U.S. cinemas on December 23, 2022, followed by a wider release on January 20, 2023, distributed by United Artists Releasing. The film received critical acclaim for Polley’s direction and screenplay, as well as the performances of the cast, particularly Foy, Buckley, and Whishaw. It was recognized as one of the top ten films of 2022 by the National Board of Review and the American Film Institute. At the 95th Academy Awards, it earned nominations for Best Picture and Best Adapted Screenplay.
