Description: Set in 1650 Ireland, the town of Kilkenny is ordered by the authoritarian Lord Protector Oliver Cromwell to clear the nearby woods, which brings them into conflict with a wolf pack. English hunter Bill Goodfellowe and his rebellious daughter Robyn are summoned by Cromwell to eliminate the wolves. Eager to assist her father, Robyn secretly follows him into the forest with her pet falcon, Merlyn. While attempting to shoot a wolf, she accidentally wounds Merlyn. A mysterious girl appears, takes the falcon into the woods, and Robyn follows. Upon finding Merlyn miraculously healed, Robyn is startled by a young wolf, falls into a trap, and is bitten as the wolf frees her. Led to the wolves’ den, Robyn discovers the wolf is the same girl, named Mebh, who reveals she is a “wolfwalker”—a being whose spirit transforms into a wolf during sleep. Robyn befriends Mebh and learns Mebh’s mother, Moll, is searching for a new home for their pack.
Robyn tries to convince her father about the wolfwalkers, but he dismisses her and scolds her for entering the forest. The next day, while working in the scullery under Cromwell’s orders, Robyn is drawn to a hidden cage by a mysterious voice but is sent away by the head maid. That night, Robyn’s soul transforms into a wolf, a result of Mebh’s bite, turning her into a wolfwalker. She returns to the woods, where Mebh helps her adapt to her new form.
