Description: In the rural Ozarks of Missouri, 17-year-old Ree Dolly takes care of her mentally ill mother, Connie, and her two younger siblings, 12-year-old Sonny and 6-year-old Ashlee. Despite their poverty, Ree ensures her siblings are fed and teaches them essential survival skills like hunting and cooking. Her father, Jessup, has been absent for a long time, and his location is unknown. He is currently out on bail after being arrested for manufacturing meth. The sheriff informs Ree that if her father fails to attend his court hearing, their family will lose their home, as it was used as collateral for his bond. Determined to keep the house, Ree begins searching for her father. She starts by approaching her meth-addicted uncle, Teardrop, and later tries to speak with the local crime boss, Thump Milton, who refuses to meet her. All she encounters are warnings to stop her search and rumors that Jessup either died in a meth lab explosion or fled to avoid the trial.
When Jessup misses his court date, the bondsman gives Ree a week to provide proof of her father’s death, or else the house and land will be seized. Ree insists that her father must be dead, claiming, “Dollys don’t run.” In her relentless pursuit of the truth, Ree attempts to confront Milton again, only to be violently attacked by his family members. Teardrop rescues her and assures them Ree won’t cause further trouble. He later reveals that Jessup was killed for planning to inform on other meth producers, but the identity of his killer remains unknown.
