**Storyline:**
Charlie Bucket, a poor paperboy, watches children visit a candy shop on his way home from school. He passes by Willy Wonka’s chocolate factory, where a mysterious tinker recites lines from William Allingham’s poem “The Fairies” and tells Charlie, “Nobody ever goes in, and nobody ever comes out.” Charlie rushes home to his widowed mother and bedridden grandparents. That night, Charlie shares the tinker’s words with his Grandpa Joe, who explains that Wonka had locked the factory years ago to protect his recipes from spies sent by rival candy makers, including Arthur Slugworth. After three years, Wonka resumed selling candy, but the factory gates remained closed, leaving everyone puzzled about who was running it.
Wonka then announces that he has hidden five Golden Tickets in Wonka Bars. Those who find them will receive a factory tour and a lifetime supply of chocolate. The first four tickets are found by Augustus Gloop, a gluttonous boy from West Germany; Veruca Salt, a spoiled girl whose father is wealthy; Violet Beauregarde, a gum-chewing girl from Montana; and Mike Teevee, a television-obsessed boy from Arizona. Each time a winner is announced, a suspicious man whispers to them. When Veruca receives her ticket, the man appears at her father’s factory, where he had been seen working earlier.
A news report reveals the fifth ticket was found in Paraguay by a millionaire casino owner, crushing Charlie’s hopes. The next day, Charlie finds money in a gutter and buys a Wonka Bar. With the change, he buys another for Grandpa Joe. While walking home, Charlie learns the millionaire forged the fifth ticket. Upon opening his Wonka Bar, Charlie discovers the real fifth ticket. As he rushes home, he meets the same man who whispered to the other winners. The man introduces himself as Slugworth and offers a reward for a sample of Wonka’s latest creation, the Everlasting Gobstopper.
