To stop a prophecy that predicts her downfall through a child marked with a special rune, the evil sorceress Queen Bavmorda of Nockmaar imprisons all pregnant women in her kingdom. The child is born, but her mother convinces the midwife to secretly take the baby out of the castle. After executing the mother, Bavmorda sends her wolf-like hounds to hunt down the midwife. Months later, the midwife is forced to set the baby adrift on a grass raft before being killed by the hounds. Determined to eliminate the child, Bavmorda enlists her daughter, Sorsha, and an army led by General Kael to capture the baby.
Downriver, in a village of Nelwyn (a race of small people), the baby is discovered by the children of Willow Ufgood, an aspiring sorcerer and farmer. Willow’s family cares for the child and grows to love her. During a village festival, a Nockmaar hound attacks the cradles, prompting the Nelwyn warriors to kill it. Willow presents the baby to the village leader, the High Aldwin, who orders the child to be returned to the Daikini (tall people).
Willow and a group of volunteers embark on a journey to find a Daikini family for the baby. At a crossroads, they encounter Madmartigan, a mercenary trapped in a crow’s cage, who offers to take the baby in exchange for his freedom. While most of the Nelwyn agree to the deal, Willow and his friend Meegosh refuse, causing the others to abandon them. Later, after meeting Madmartigan’s old comrade Airk, who is leading an army against Bavmorda, Willow agrees to Madmartigan’s terms. On their way back, Willow and Meegosh discover that brownies have stolen the baby and set off to retrieve her.
