Description: White Noise is a 2005 supernatural horror thriller film directed by Geoffrey Sax and starring Michael Keaton. The title refers to electronic voice phenomena (EVP), where voices believed to originate from the “other side” can be heard on audio recordings. Despite receiving mostly negative reviews from critics and audiences, the film performed well at the box office. Its success led Universal and other studios to recognize the potential for horror films released in January, a period traditionally considered less favorable for cinematic releases.
The story follows Jonathan Rivers, an architect whose life is turned upside down after the unexpected death of his wife, Anna. He is approached by Raymond Price, who claims to have recorded messages from Anna using EVP. Initially skeptical, Jonathan later learns about his wife’s tragic drowning and becomes obsessed with contacting her through EVP. A psychic warns him that while precautions are taken to avoid hostile entities, EVP is an uncontrolled process with no safeguards.
Jonathan befriends Sarah Tate, who also seeks Raymond’s help after losing her fiancé. When Raymond is found dead, Jonathan begins to attract the attention of three demons linked to his obsession. He discovers that some messages he receives are from people who are not yet dead but may soon meet their fate. In one instance, Jonathan hears cries from a woman and finds her in a car with a child. He manages to save the child but not the woman. At her funeral, Jonathan informs the grieving husband of the events, who thanks him for saving his son but asks to be left alone.
