Description: In 1977, Harry Burns and Sally Albright graduate from the University of Chicago and embark on a road trip to New York City. Sally is set to start journalism school, while Harry begins his career. During the journey, they discuss their opposing views on relationships. Harry believes men and women cannot be friends due to romantic complications, but Sally disagrees. A conversation at a diner turns awkward when Harry compliments Sally’s appearance, leading her to accuse him of making a pass. They part ways on unfriendly terms.
Five years later, in 1982, Harry and Sally meet again on a flight. Sally is now dating Harry’s neighbor, and Harry is engaged, which surprises Sally. Despite this, Harry proposes they become friends, though they eventually conclude it’s unlikely.
In 1987, they unexpectedly cross paths in a bookstore and decide to reconnect. Over coffee, they share updates on their lives: Sally’s relationship ended because her ex didn’t want marriage, while Harry’s wife left him for another man. They agree to pursue a friendship and start spending time together, sharing late-night phone calls and dinners while discussing their love lives.
During a New Year’s Eve party, Harry and Sally realize they are attracted to each other. Still, they set each other up with their best friends, Marie and Jess, who quickly fall in love and later become engaged. One night, Sally confides in Harry that her ex is getting married, leaving her emotional and uncertain about their friendship.
