Description: Boris Yelnikoff, a cynical chess teacher and former Columbia professor in quantum mechanics, leads a reclusive life. Divorced and avoiding most human interactions, he spends his time criticizing others for not meeting his intellectual standards. He obsessively washes his hands while singing the “Happy Birthday” song to time the process. One night, Boris finds Melody, a naive 21-year-old, on his doorstep and reluctantly takes her in. Melody, from a conservative Southern family in Mississippi, ran away from home and asks to stay with Boris while she searches for a job. Despite their stark differences in age, background, and intellect, Melody develops feelings for him.
Eventually, Melody finds work as a dog walker and meets Perry Singleton, but she loses interest in him because of his overly optimistic outlook. Boris, realizing his love for Melody, marries her. A year later, Melody’s mother, Marietta, tracks her down, distraught after her husband abandoned her due to financial losses. Disapproving of Boris, Marietta tries to convince Melody to leave him. During a lunch outing, Marietta encounters Boris’s friend Leo, who takes an interest in her photography skills. Meanwhile, Marietta schemes to involve Randy Lee James, who has fallen for Melody, in breaking up her marriage. Leo offers Marietta professional opportunities, and their relationship deepens.
