Description: Claire Spencer, a former cellist, and her husband Norman, a renowned scientist and professor, live a peaceful life in Vermont. Their marriage appears strained after their daughter, Caitlin, leaves for college. Claire becomes suspicious of her new neighbors, Mary and Warren Feur, whose relationship seems troubled. When Mary disappears for several days, Claire fears Warren may have harmed her.
While near a lake next to their home, Claire thinks she spots a woman’s body in the water. She later discovers a strange key hidden in a heater vent. After experiencing unsettling events and sensing an eerie presence in their house, Claire and her friend Jody attempt a séance, which fails. Claire finds the bathtub filled with hot water and the words “You know” written on the steamed mirror. Her computer inexplicably types “MEF” repeatedly, leading Claire to believe it’s the spirit of the missing Mary, but Norman dismisses her concerns. Mary eventually returns home, explaining she visited her mother in Rhode Island after a fight with Warren.
A framed newspaper article about Norman falls and shatters, revealing a story about another missing woman named Madison Elizabeth Frank, whose initials match “MEF.” Claire investigates further and visits Madison’s mother, who shows her Madison’s bedroom. Claire takes a lock of Madison’s hair and notices a photo of her wearing a distinctive necklace. That night, Claire conducts a ritual using Madison’s hair, summoning her spirit, which possesses Claire. While possessed, Claire seduces Norman aggressively, and Madison’s spirit shocks him with revelations. After Claire drops the lock of hair, she reverts to herself and recalls a repressed memory of Norman’s past affair with a student, which he admits to during a difficult period in their marriage.
