Helen, an 18-year-old, challenges societal norms by rejecting conventional hygiene practices and engaging in provocative and taboo behaviors. She experiments with her sexuality, even visiting a brothel to explore attraction to women. Helen’s parents are divorced, and she longs for their reconciliation, but her mother struggles with depression and obsessive cleanliness, while her father remains emotionally detached. Helen also has a younger brother, whom she teases by taking his stuffed bear.
Feeling isolated and unloved, Helen finds solace in her friend Corinna, with whom she pushes societal boundaries. A self-inflicted injury from shaving sends Helen to the hospital, where she schemes to reunite her parents. There, she develops feelings for Robin, a handsome nurse still recovering from a past relationship. Robin’s ex, also a nurse, complicates Helen’s hospital stay, but Helen and Robin eventually fall in love.
Helen’s rebellious behavior is linked to a childhood trauma: at eight, she discovered her mother attempting suicide with her brother using gas from the oven. By the end of the film, Helen reflects on this event, having finally discussed it with her brother, calling it the hardest conversation she’s ever had. As Helen leaves the hospital with Robin, she sees her parents meeting in the parking lot, signaling a potential reconciliation, and decides to move forward, asking Robin to keep driving.
