**Storyline:**
In New York City during 1957, two teenage gangs, the Jets and the Sharks, vie for dominance on the Upper West Side. The Jets, led by Riff, are a group of white teenagers, while the Sharks, led by Bernardo, are Puerto Rican immigrants. After a clash between the gangs, Lieutenant Schrank and Officer Krupke intervene to break up the fight. The Jets challenge the Sharks to a rumble following an upcoming dance.
Riff convinces his best friend Tony, a former co-founder of the Jets, to join the fight. Tony, hesitant at first, agrees to attend the dance, sensing something significant is about to happen. Meanwhile, Bernardo’s younger sister, Maria, shares her excitement about the dance with her friend Anita, who is Bernardo’s girlfriend.
At the dance, the gangs remain segregated, refusing to interact. When Tony arrives, he and Maria instantly fall in love, much to Bernardo’s disapproval. Riff proposes a late-night meeting at Doc’s drugstore to finalize the rules for the rumble. Maria is sent home, and Anita criticizes Bernardo for being overly protective of his sister.
Tony later visits Maria’s fire escape, where they declare their love for each other. Officer Krupke suspects the Jets are plotting trouble and warns them to stay out of it. The gangs agree to a one-on-one fistfight under the highway the next evening. When Lieutenant Schrank investigates, the gangs pretend to be friendly, and he leaves without uncovering their plans.
The following day, Maria unintentionally learns about the rumble from Anita at the bridal shop where they work. Tony visits Maria, and Anita warns them of the consequences if Bernardo discovers their relationship. Maria convinces Tony to stop the fight, and the two dream of their future together.
