Description: In 1954, during the First Indochina War, a French unit is ambushed by Viet Minh forces. Their commander, Nguyen Huu An, declares, “Kill all they send, and they will stop coming.” Over a decade later, the United States is engaged in the Vietnam War. U.S. Army Lieutenant Colonel Hal Moore is tasked with training and leading a battalion. Upon arriving in Vietnam, he learns of an attack on an American base and is ordered to take his 400 men to eliminate the North Vietnamese forces, despite lacking clear intelligence on the enemy’s strength. Moore commands a newly-formed air cavalry unit into the Ia Drang Valley. After landing, the soldiers capture a North Vietnamese soldier who reveals they’ve entered the base camp of a seasoned enemy division of 4,000 troops.
During their mission, 2nd Lieutenant Henry Herrick spots an enemy scout and pursues him, leading his reluctant platoon into an ambush. Several soldiers, including Herrick, are killed, leaving the remaining platoon members surrounded and isolated. Sergeant Savage takes charge, using artillery support and nighttime cover to defend against the Vietnamese forces.
Meanwhile, Moore’s main force, aided by helicopters delivering reinforcements and supplies, manages to fortify vulnerable positions. Despite being outnumbered and trapped, they hold off the North Vietnamese with artillery, mortars, and airlifts. Eventually, Nguyen Huu An orders a full-scale assault on the American position, escalating the battle.
