Description: Benjamin Mee has been mourning the death of his wife, Katherine, for six months. When his 14-year-old son, Dylan, is expelled from school, Benjamin decides it’s time for a fresh start. He begins searching for a new home with his 7-year-old daughter, Rosie, and their realtor, Mr. Stevens. After viewing several houses without success, Rosie discovers a listing for a large, old property. Upon visiting, they immediately fall in love with it. However, they soon learn that the purchase includes a zoo that had been closed for years.
Despite initial hesitations, Benjamin is inspired by Rosie’s joy as she plays with the peacocks and decides to buy the property. Dylan, however, is unhappy about leaving his friends and withdraws into his art. Benjamin’s brother, Duncan, tries to discourage him from the purchase, but Benjamin proceeds regardless. The zoo’s staff, led by head keeper Kelly Foster, begins preparing the zoo for reopening. When Kelly questions Benjamin’s decision to buy the zoo despite his lack of experience, he simply replies, “Why not?” Meanwhile, Dylan befriends Kelly’s 13-year-old cousin, Lily, who develops a crush on him.
The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) inspector, Walter Ferris, conducts a surprise visit and demands costly repairs that Benjamin cannot afford. Rumors spread that Benjamin might sell the zoo, causing the staff’s morale to plummet. Dylan, learning of the rumors, expresses his excitement about leaving, hurting Lily’s feelings. Later, Benjamin discovers that Katherine left him an investment account, encouraging him to use the funds wisely while following his heart. Duncan advises Benjamin to walk away, but Benjamin remains determined to make the zoo a success.
