Description: In the year 2500, Earth has been transformed into a vast ocean as sea levels have risen over 7,600 meters (25,000 feet), submerging all continents. The remnants of humanity survive in makeshift floating communities called atolls, with the concept of living on land becoming a distant memory. Among these survivors, a legend persists of a mythical place known as “Dryland,” hidden somewhere in the endless waters.
The story follows the Mariner, a solitary wanderer played by Kevin Costner, who arrives at an atoll aboard his trimaran to trade dirt, a scarce and valuable resource. The atoll’s inhabitants soon discover that the Mariner is a mutant with gills and webbed feet, leading them to condemn him to death in their recycling pit. However, before the execution can occur, the atoll is attacked by the Smokers, a ruthless gang of pirates. The Smokers are searching for a young girl named Enola (Tina Majorino), who they believe has a map to Dryland tattooed on her back. Enola’s guardian, Helen (Jeanne Tripplehorn), attempts to flee with her using a gas balloon, but the plan fails, forcing her to free the Mariner and seek his help.
Together, the Mariner, Helen, and Enola escape the atoll on the trimaran, pursued by the relentless Smokers. Along their journey, Helen’s actions inadvertently damage the Mariner’s boat, angering him. Despite this, he eventually reveals the truth about humanity’s past by showing Helen the remains of a submerged city and the dirt on the ocean floor. Their temporary peace is shattered when the Smokers catch up to them, capturing Enola and threatening the lives of the Mariner and Helen. In a desperate attempt to survive, the Mariner takes Helen underwater, using his gills to help her breathe and evade their pursuers.
