Description: Ray Ferrier is a divorced dockworker and an imperfect father. After his ex-wife and her new husband leave their teenage son and young daughter with him for a rare weekend visit, a strange and powerful lightning storm strikes. The movie, *War of the Worlds*, begins with a narration explaining that Earth was being observed by highly intelligent but ruthless extraterrestrials. As humans dominated the planet, these beings planned to take it over.
Ray works as a crane operator in Brooklyn, New York, and is estranged from his children: 10-year-old Rachel and teenage Robbie. His ex-wife, Mary Ann, drops them off at his home in Bayonne, New Jersey, before heading to Boston to visit her parents.
Later, a bizarre storm causes multiple lightning strikes at a local intersection, triggering an EMP that disables all technology and electricity. Ray witnesses a massive tripod war machine emerging from the ground, using devastating energy weapons to annihilate the area and reduce witnesses to ash. He quickly gathers his children, steals a van, and seeks refuge at Mary Ann’s empty suburban home.
That night, they take shelter in the basement but hear a strange roar followed by an explosion that destroys the house. The next morning, Ray discovers a crashed Boeing 747 in the neighborhood. He encounters a news team investigating the wreckage, who explain that tripods have attacked major cities worldwide. These machines are protected by force shields, and their operators arrived during the lightning storms to activate the tripods, which had been buried underground for millions of years.
