Description: In the summer of 2009, General Glen McMahon, a highly respected four-star general known for his leadership in Iraq, is assigned to Afghanistan. His mission is to assess the situation and provide recommendations to the government on how to conclude the ongoing war. However, he is explicitly instructed not to request additional troops. Despite this, McMahon and his team, including his trusted colleague Major General Greg Pulver, firmly believe that victory is achievable. They decide to recommend that President Obama authorize a surge of 40,000 troops to secure Helmand Province and stabilize the region.
The Secretary of State informs McMahon that his report will not be reviewed until after Afghanistan’s presidential election because his request for more troops conflicts with the election process. Meanwhile, Captain Badi Basim, a member of the Afghan National Army, joins McMahon’s team as a representative of the Afghan people, though he arrives in civilian clothes rather than his uniform.
As delays continue due to election issues, McMahon grows frustrated and leaks his assessment to the *Washington Post*. He also conducts an interview with *60 Minutes*, revealing that he has only met with President Obama once in the past 70 days. In response, the U.S. government announces that 30,000 troops will be sent to Afghanistan, with all coalition forces set to withdraw within 18 months. To secure the remaining 10,000 troops needed for his strategy, McMahon travels to Paris to negotiate with coalition nations.
In Paris, McMahon learns that President Obama wishes to meet with him in Denmark. However, the ambassador to Afghanistan warns McMahon that he risks being fired for insubordination if he continues to antagonize the President.
