Storyline:
In 1912, a bay Irish Hunter is born in Devon, England. At an auction, farmer Ted Narracott outbids his landlord Lyons to buy the colt, despite his wife Rose’s objections, as the family needs a working horse to plough the fields, not an Irish Hunter. Their son Albert, along with his best friend Andrew, names the colt Joey and trains him to respond to an owl’s call. Over time, Albert and Joey develop a strong bond. Against all odds, the pair successfully ploughs a rocky field, saving the family’s farm.
Rose shows Albert his father’s medals from the Second Boer War and gives him Ted’s regimental pennant, revealing that his father carries both physical and emotional scars from the war.
In 1914, as war with Germany is declared, heavy rain destroys the family’s crops, forcing Ted to sell Joey to the army. Heartbroken, Albert tries to stop the sale but fails. Captain James Nicholls, noticing Albert’s attachment to the horse, promises to take care of Joey. Albert attempts to enlist but is too young. Before the company leaves, he ties his father’s pennant to Joey’s bridle and vows to find him one day.
Joey bonds with Topthorn, a black stallion, as they are trained for military service. The horses are deployed to Flanders under the command of Nicholls and Major Stewart. During a cavalry charge through a German encampment, the unit is devastated by machine gun fire. Nicholls and most of the cavalrymen are killed, and the Germans capture the horses.
Gunther, a young German soldier, is tasked with caring for Joey and Topthorn. When his brother Michael is sent to the front line, Gunther takes the horses and deserts the war with his brother. The German army eventually catches up with the boys, and they are executed for desertion, but the horses are left behind. The next morning, a French girl named Emilie discovers the horses.
