**Storyline:**
The story is narrated in the first person by an unnamed magistrate overseeing a settlement on the frontier of “The Empire.” His peaceful life is disrupted when the Empire declares a state of emergency and deploys its special forces, the Third Bureau, due to rumors of an impending attack by the indigenous people, referred to as “barbarians.” Led by Colonel Joll, the Third Bureau launches an expedition beyond the frontier, capturing and torturing several barbarians, killing some, and then returning to prepare for a larger campaign.
As the events unfold, the magistrate begins to question colonialism and personally cares for a barbarian girl who has been left disabled and partially blind from the tortures inflicted by the Third Bureau. Their relationship becomes intimate yet uncertain. Eventually, the magistrate decides to return the girl to her people, embarking on a perilous journey through barren lands. After sharing a moment of intimacy, he successfully returns her but is left with unanswered questions about their connection.
Upon his return, the magistrate is arrested by the Third Bureau for desertion and aiding “The Enemy.” With no prospect of a trial during the emergency, he is confined to a locked cellar, stripped of basic freedoms. Eventually, he finds a key to escape but discovers there is nowhere to go, resorting to scavenging for food while navigating his newfound isolation.
