Description: Set in post-World War II Italy, “Voice from the Stone” tells the story of Malvina, who is on her deathbed at her family estate. She tells her young son Jakob that another woman will come to love him and that his next words will bring her back to him. Seven months later, Verena, a British nurse specializing in child care, arrives. Since his mother’s death, Jakob has not spoken, and Verena is the latest English-speaking nurse hired by Klaus, Jakob’s father. Verena meets Alessio, the estate caretaker, and Lilia, a retired housekeeper. Though Jakob is polite, he remains distant and cold.
Verena discovers that Malvina’s family owned the estate and nearby quarries for over 1,200 years. Malvina chose not to manage the quarries, instead becoming a renowned pianist. Most quarry workers perished during the war, and Malvina allowed the quarries to flood. Alessio still honors the deceased workers, claiming, “Life. Death. Love. The stone was everything.”
One night, Verena finds Jakob listening intently to the stone wall in his room. Klaus fears Jakob believes he can hear Malvina’s voice in the stone. Verena worries she’s unqualified and that Jakob needs a mental health expert. When she sees Jakob on the edge of a high tower, she risks her life to save him, showing her commitment to his well-being.
Verena gently explains to Jakob that the voice he hears is real but a trick of his mind. The next day, he listens to Malvina’s tombstone in the family mausoleum. Alessio tells Verena that 40 generations are buried there “in the stone.” Verena, orphaned at Jakob’s age, shares that wishing to hear lost loved ones doesn’t make it happen.
