Description: The movie “Vivarium” from 2020 opens with a brief clip depicting the parasitic behavior of cuckoos, which lay their eggs in the nests of other birds. After hatching, the cuckoo pushes the host mother’s young out of the nest and is cared for by the surrogate mother. By the end of the clip, the cuckoo grows unnaturally large, consuming all the resources provided by the mother bird.
The story follows a young couple, Tom and Gemma, who are looking to buy a house. They meet a peculiar real estate agent named Martin, who introduces them to a new housing development called Yonder. Upon arriving, they find the place eerily silent, empty, and otherworldly, with identical suburban homes. Martin shows them house number nine and then mysteriously disappears. When Tom and Gemma try to leave, they find themselves unable to escape, as every road leads them back to the same house. With their car out of fuel, they decide to stay the night.
The next day, Tom climbs onto the roof to search for a way out, only to discover that Yonder seems to stretch endlessly in all directions. The couple attempts to follow the artificial-looking sun, hoping it will guide them to freedom, but they end up back at the same house. They find a delivery box filled with food and essentials. Frustrated, Tom sets the house on fire to attract attention, but when they wake up the next day, the house is rebuilt, and they discover an infant in a box with a note: “Raise the child and be released.”
Three months later, the infant has rapidly grown into a seven-year-old boy with an unsettling, adult-like voice. The child mimics Tom and Gemma’s behavior and demands constant attention, emitting a high-pitched scream when ignored. He spends much of his time absorbed in strange patterns on the television, closely observing and imitating the couple.
