Description: The film “Visitor Q,” released in 2001, is frequently compared to Pier Paolo Pasolini’s “Teorema.” In both stories, a mysterious visitor arrives at a family’s home, engages with each member in a deeply personal way, and leaves a lasting impact on their lives.
The movie opens with a provocative question: “Have you ever done it with your Dad?” Miki Yamazaki, a young prostitute, attempts to convince her father, Kiyoshi, to have sex with her. Kiyoshi, who is filming the encounter for a documentary on Japanese youth, eventually gives in. After a brief encounter, Miki demands more money due to her father’s quick performance. Kiyoshi then realizes the camera has been recording the entire event.
In the next scene, titled “Have you ever been hit on the head?” an unidentified man, referred to as the visitor, strikes Kiyoshi with a rock without explanation. The film continues with a segment called “Have you ever hit your mom?” Here, the mother, Keiko, is seen working on a puzzle, her hands marked with red bruises from prior abuse. Her son, Takuya, enters and throws objects at the walls in frustration over a toothbrush his mother bought him. He then strikes her with a rug beater. Later, bullies from Takuya’s school fire fireworks into his bedroom, forcing him to hide on the floor. Keiko is later shown injecting heroin, suggesting she is a regular user.
On his way home from work, Kiyoshi is attacked again by the visitor. The two arrive at the house, where Keiko serves them dinner. Kiyoshi informs the family that the visitor will be staying with them for a while. During the meal, Takuya appears and begins beating his mother once more.
The film explores themes of familial dysfunction, abuse, and the disruptive influence of an outsider on an already fractured household.
