Description: Virata Parvam, also known as “The Book of Virata,” is a 2022 Indian Telugu-language period romantic action drama film. Directed by Venu Udugula and produced by Suresh Productions and SLV Cinemas, the movie features Sai Pallavi and Rana Daggubati in lead roles, with supporting performances by Priyamani, Nandita Das, Naveen Chandra, Zarina Wahab, Easwari Rao, and Sai Chand.
Set in the Telangana region during the 1990s Naxalite movement, the story revolves around Vennela (played by Pallavi), a young woman who becomes deeply infatuated with Ravi Shankar (Daggubati), a Naxal leader. Born in 1973 in Warangal district amidst conflict between Naxals and the police, Vennela grows up influenced by her father’s poetry and later by the writings of Ravi Shankar, who uses the pen name Aranya. Her admiration for Ravi turns into an obsession.
In 1992, when the state police interrogate her village on suspicion of supporting Naxals, Vennela’s father is brutally beaten for resisting their actions. Vennela confronts the police, only to face harassment. Ravi and his group intervene, ambushing the police and ensuring the villagers’ safety, which further captivates Vennela. Determined to be with him, she calls off her arranged marriage to her cousin and leaves home to pursue Ravi, writing to her parents not to search for her.
Filming for Virata Parvam took place in Vikarabad, Warangal, Hyderabad, and Kerala, beginning in July 2019 and concluding in December 2020. The film’s music was composed by Suresh Bobbili, with cinematography by Dani Sanchez-Lopez and Divakar Mani. Originally slated for release on April 30, 2021, the film was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic and eventually premiered theatrically on June 17, 2022. Despite receiving positive reviews, it underperformed at the box office, earning ₹12 crore against a ₹15 crore budget.
