Description: The 2022 film *Viking Wolf*, originally titled *Vikingulven* in Norwegian, initially suggests a tale of Norse werewolves wreaking havoc along the coastline. However, the story takes a different turn. It begins with a prologue styled like a silent film, depicting a raiding party led by Grim Gudbrand attacking an abbey. The monks warn them against entering a locked room, but the raiders, assuming it contains treasure, break in and discover a red-eyed, snarling wolf cub. They take it with them, and by the time their longship returns home, the cub is the only survivor. The creature escapes into the woods, where it remains hidden.
In the present day, 17-year-old Thale, played by Elli Rhiannon Müller Osborne, is invited by her friend Jonas, portrayed by Sjur Vatne Brean, to a party in the same woods. The gathering ends in tragedy when Thale and Jonas are attacked by a mysterious animal, and the mayor’s daughter, Elin, played by Silje Øksland Krohne, goes missing.
Directed by Stig Svendsen and co-written by Espen Aukan, *Viking Wolf* lacks imaginative depth in its setup. Thale, who has recently moved to Nybo, struggles with her strained relationship with her mother, Liv, played by Liv Mjönes, following her father’s death and her mother’s remarriage to Arthur, portrayed by Vidar Magnussen. Thale finds solace in her younger sister Jenny, played by Mia Fosshaug Laubacher, who is deaf and communicates through sign language. As more bodies appear, Thale’s troubled past makes her a potential suspect.
