**Plot Summary:**
After a rooftop chase that results in the tragic death of a fellow policeman, San Francisco detective John “Scottie” Ferguson retires due to his crippling fear of heights and vertigo. Determined to overcome his phobia, Scottie attempts to confront his fears. His ex-fiancée, Midge Wood, a lingerie designer, suggests that only another intense emotional shock might cure him.

Scottie is later approached by Gavin Elster, a college acquaintance, who asks him to follow his wife, Madeleine. Gavin claims her mental state is unstable, potentially putting her in danger. Scottie reluctantly agrees and begins shadowing Madeleine. He observes her visiting various locations, including a florist, Mission San Francisco de Asís, the grave of Carlotta Valdes (1831–1857), and the Legion of Honor art museum, where she gazes at Carlotta’s portrait.

Scottie follows Madeleine to the McKittrick Hotel, but upon investigation, she appears to be absent. A local historian reveals that Carlotta Valdes, a mistress abandoned by a wealthy man after bearing his child, committed suicide. Gavin explains that Carlotta is Madeleine’s great-grandmother, though Madeleine seems unaware of this connection and has no memory of the places she has visited.

Later, Scottie tails Madeleine to Fort Point, where she leaps into the bay. He rescues her, and the next day, Madeleine visits Scottie to deliver a letter. The two spend the day together, traveling to Muir Woods and Cypress Point, where they share a heartfelt moment.

The following day, Madeleine recounts a nightmare to Scottie, who identifies its setting as Mission San Juan Bautista, Carlotta’s childhood home. They travel there together and confess their love for one another. However, Madeleine suddenly runs into the church and up the bell tower. Scottie, unable to follow due to his fear of heights, watches helplessly as Madeleine plunges to her death.
