**Plot Summary:**
Ben Manalowitz, a journalist from New York, receives an unexpected phone call from Ty Shaw, informing him of the death of Abby Shaw, whom Ben had only briefly known. Ty insists that Abby, who apparently died from a drug overdose, was actually murdered, claiming she never used drugs. Ty invites Ben to Texas to attend Abby’s funeral and help uncover the truth.
Upon arriving in Texas, Ben meets Abby’s family, including her brother Ty, her mother Sharon, sisters Paris and Kansas City, younger brother “El Stupido,” and Granny Carole. Ty expresses his belief that Abby was killed and asks Ben to join him in seeking justice. Ben, seizing the opportunity for a story about grief and denial, agrees to help.
During his investigation, Ben and Ty visit the local oil fields, where Ty’s friend Crawl reveals that illegal parties often take place in an area called “the Afterparty,” known for its history of unexplained deaths. Ben also encounters Quinten Sellers, a record producer who provides him with a memory stick containing recordings of Abby.
Ben confronts Sancholo, who denies involvement in Abby’s death and confirms that she was not a drug user. Later, Ben attends a rodeo with the Shaw family, where he accidentally offends the crowd by supporting the Texas Longhorns instead of the favored Texas Tech Red Raiders. Ben’s investigation leads him to four local law enforcement agencies, who each shift responsibility for “the Afterparty” due to overlapping jurisdictions.
