Description: In 2004, the Government of Pakistan initiated a review of unresolved cases related to Indian prisoners as a gesture of goodwill. Saamiya Siddiqui, a young Pakistani lawyer, was assigned her first case: defending prisoner 786, who had remained silent for 22 years. When Saamiya addressed him by his name, Veer Pratap Singh, he finally opened up and shared his story.
Zaara Haayat Khan, a spirited Pakistani woman from a politically prominent family in Lahore, was tasked by her beloved Sikh governess, Bebe, with scattering her ashes in the Sutlej River among her ancestors. While traveling to India, Zaara’s bus met with an accident. She was rescued by Veer, an Indian Air Force pilot, who helped her fulfill Bebe’s final wish. Veer invited Zaara to spend a day with him in his village to celebrate Lohri, where she met his uncle, Choudhary Sumer, and his aunt, Saraswati. During this time, Veer began to realize he was falling in love with Zaara.
The following day, Veer accompanied Zaara to the train station for her journey back to Lahore, intending to confess his feelings. However, he encountered Zaara’s fiancé, Raza Sharazi, and ultimately confessed his love, acknowledging that they could never be together. Zaara boarded the train in silence, bidding farewell, both believing their paths would never cross again.
Back in Pakistan, Zaara recognized her own love for Veer but felt obligated to uphold her family’s honor by marrying Raza, a decision that would also advance her father Jehangir’s political career. Seeing Zaara’s distress, her maid and friend Shabbo contacted Veer, urging him to take Zaara away before the wedding. Veer resigned from the Indian Air Force and traveled to Pakistan. Upon his arrival, Zaara ran into his arms in tears, causing her father to fall ill from the shock. Mariyam pleaded with Veer to leave Zaara, fearing that Jehangir’s reputation and health would suffer if their relationship became public.
