Description: **Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets (2017)**
**Plot Summary:**
Set in the 28th century, the story unfolds as Earth’s nations collaborate with extraterrestrial civilizations. Originating from the Apollo–Soyuz Test Project of 1975, the International Space Station has grown into a massive space-traveling city named Alpha. Home to millions of species from thousands of planets, Alpha faces challenges that threaten its stability. To maintain peace across the galaxy, the United Human Federation establishes a special police force. This unit includes Major Valerian, a carefree and overconfident officer, and his pragmatic partner, Sergeant Laureline.
During a mission, Valerian experiences a vivid dream of a planet called Mül, where a peaceful humanoid civilization thrives. They harvest energy-rich pearls and use small creatures to replicate them. However, their tranquility is shattered when debris and a massive spacecraft crash onto the planet, obliterating all life. The planet’s young princess, Lihö-Minaa, sends a telepathic message before perishing.
Disturbed by the vision, Valerian confides in Laureline, sparking a disagreement about their relationship. Analysis suggests that Valerian received a signal from another time and space. His new task is to retrieve a rare “Mül converter,” a device capable of replicating anything it consumes, currently held by a black market dealer named Igon Siruss. Before embarking on the mission, Valerian proposes to Laureline, but she rejects him, citing his fear of commitment and past indiscretions.
The duo travels to Kirian, a planet in an alternate universe, where they infiltrate a marketplace called Big Market. There, they encounter Igon and two mysterious figures resembling the beings from Valerian’s dream, who also seek the converter. Valerian and Laureline manage to secure the converter and stealthily obtain one of the energy pearls.
