Description: “Vada Chennai” (2018) is a Tamil film with a non-linear narrative. The story begins in 1987 when Guna, “Jawa” Pazhani, Velu, and Senthil kill a high-profile man at a North Madras restaurant. Senthil convinces Guna and Velu to surrender for the crime, promising to bail them out. However, a year later, the two remain in jail, creating tension with Senthil despite attempts by Mani and Thambi to mediate.
The plot then shifts to 2000, where the new warden of Madras Central Prison aims to eliminate illegal activities controlled by Senthil from the 7th Block. Senthil stays confined to this block, fearing retaliation from Guna’s men in the 11th Block. Anbu and Velu’s brother Siva are brought to prison following a fight. Anbu gains Senthil’s trust by saving one of his henchmen, Raju, from Siva. Placed in the 11th Block, Anbu faces danger after exposing Mani’s mobile phone during a raid but is saved by the warden.
In 1991, the story explores Anbu’s life as a skilled carrom player who often competes in bet matches for Siva. On the night of Rajiv Gandhi’s assassination, chaos erupts in Anbu’s neighborhood, with people looting shops. Anbu encounters a masked girl, Padma, who steals a sewing machine from him. Although he lets her go, complications arise when a shopkeeper files a complaint against Anbu. Despite this, Anbu and Padma form a relationship. Later, Anbu saves Guna from contract killers during a festival, only to discover they are Senthil’s men, escalating the feud between Guna and Senthil.
