Description: V/H/S/99 is a 2022 American found footage horror anthology film, marking the fifth installment in the V/H/S series. Directed by Johannes Roberts, Vanessa & Joseph Winter, Maggie Levin, Tyler MacIntyre, and Flying Lotus, the movie premiered on September 16, 2022, at the Toronto International Film Festival in the Midnight Madness category. It was later released as a Shudder Original Film on October 20, 2022. The film is structured as a mixtape, featuring five distinct narratives set in 1999.
Unlike earlier entries in the series, V/H/S/99 does not include an overarching frame story connecting the segments. Instead, it uses stop-motion animations of toy soldiers, created by a character from one of the segments, to transition between stories.
One of the segments follows the punk rock and prank group R.A.C.K., consisting of members Rachel, Ankur, Chris, and Kaleb. The group records their antics for their online audience and decides to break into the Colony Underground, a music venue that had burned down three years earlier after a tragic electrical fire. During the fire, the up-and-coming punk band Bitch Cat had been trampled to death by fans trying to escape. R.A.C.K. explores the abandoned venue and takes the stage to perform. During their act, they play a prank on Ankur, convincing him they are possessed, leaving him visibly shaken. When Ankur storms off after being mocked by his friends, the remaining members inflate sex dolls resembling Bitch Cat and reenact the fatal stampede. Suddenly, the zombified members of Bitch Cat appear and attack the group, killing Kaleb and Chris. Ankur manages to destroy one of the zombies before meeting his own demise. Rachel is eventually caught and dismembered, with the undead Bitch Cat members toying with her remains. The segment ends with the tape glitching, revealing the reanimated bodies of R.A.C.K., their limbs manipulated like puppets, performing on stage before the footage cuts out.
