Description: “Ustad Hotel,” released in 2012, tells the story of Abdul Razaq, a Muslim man in Kerala, and his wife Fareeda, who are eagerly awaiting the birth of their first child. Razaq hopes for a son named Faizal, affectionately called Faizi, but they have a daughter instead. Over time, Fareeda gives birth to three more girls, causing frustration for Razaq, who eventually moves to Dubai. Finally, they have a boy, but Fareeda becomes ill from multiple pregnancies and passes away. Razaq takes his five children to Dubai, where Faizi is lovingly raised by his sisters, whom he calls “Ithathas & Company.”
As Faizi grows up, his sisters marry, and his father remarries. Faizi dreams of becoming a chef, which clashes with his father’s ambitions for him to study hotel management. Faizi travels to Switzerland to attend the University of Lausanne but secretly pursues culinary arts instead of hotel management. Upon his return, Razaq is devastated, as this ruins his plans to open a five-star hotel in their hometown of Kozhikode and jeopardizes Faizi’s arranged marriage to Shahana, the daughter of a wealthy business tycoon.
Disappointed and humiliated, Razaq disowns Faizi and takes away his passport and credit cards to prevent him from moving to London, where he has a job as a sous chef at The Ivy restaurant. In defiance, Faizi travels to Kozhikode to stay with his grandfather, Kareem, who has been managing Ustad Hotel for 35 years. Over time, Faizi becomes deeply involved in the hotel’s daily operations, staying longer than he initially planned.”
