**Storyline:**
Best friends Elinor “Nory” Boxwood-Horace and Reina Carvajal discover they possess magical abilities: Nory can transform into animals, while Reina can control fire. They enroll at Sage Academy, a prestigious school for magic.
At Sage Academy, students are grouped into different classes based on their magical skills. The Flare class is for those who can create fire, like Reina. The Fluxer class is for students who can shapeshift into animals, like Nory. Other classes include Flyers (those who can fly), Fuzzy (those who communicate with animals), and Flickers (those who can summon objects).
Reina impresses with her Flare skills, but Nory accidentally transforms into a cat-dragon hybrid while attempting to become a cat. Reina is placed in the advanced Honors Flare class, while Nory is assigned to the Upside-Down Magic program, led by Budd Scriff. This program is for students with imperfect or unconventional abilities, whom Headmistress Knightslinger believes are vulnerable to Shadow Magic—a dark force that manipulates magic to possess its users.
As Nory and her classmates secretly work to master their abilities, they assist Budd in his groundskeeping duties, all while keeping their efforts hidden from Headmistress Knightslinger. Meanwhile, Reina stumbles upon a book about Shadow Magic. Unaware of its dangers, she reads a section on enhancing magical powers after being taunted by a fellow Flare student named Phillip.
Budd discovers his students’ secret training and agrees to support them, ensuring Headmistress Knightslinger remains unaware of their progress and the lurking threat of Shadow Magic.
