**Storyline:**
While two yard workers are moving an Allegheny and West Virginia Railroad (AWVR) train, pulled by locomotive #777 at Fuller Yard in northern Pennsylvania, Dewey, the train’s engineer, notices a trailing-point switch is not properly aligned. He sets the throttle to idle and leaves the cab to adjust the switch. However, the throttle suddenly shifts to full power, accelerating the train. Dewey tries to reboard but is dragged and falls, leaving the unmanned train speeding south along the mainline.
Initially believing the train is coasting, yardmaster Connie Hooper instructs lead welder Ned Oldham to intercept it in his truck and divert it off the main track. When Ned discovers the train has already passed the expected location, they realize it’s running at full throttle. Connie alerts Oscar Galvin, VP of Train Operations, and contacts local authorities to block all level crossings. Meanwhile, Ned continues chasing the runaway train in his vehicle.
Federal Railroad Administration inspector Scott Werner, visiting Fuller Yard for a safety campaign, warns that eight of the 39 cars carry highly toxic and flammable molten phenol. A derailment in a populated area could lead to a catastrophic disaster. News of the runaway train quickly attracts widespread media attention.
Connie proposes deliberately derailing the train in an unpopulated rural area, but Galvin rejects her idea, aiming to save costs. Instead, he plans to slow the train by attaching it to two locomotives operated by engineer Judd Stewart. This would allow former Marine Ryan Scott to board the runaway train via helicopter and regain control.
